Had a clinic in Portsmouth hospital in the morning, so thought I would chuck the big kit in the car and return via Hillhead just in case. Wasn't expecting any wind really since the forecast looked iffy, and indeed when I arrived around 1pm-ish it was looking very marginal, pancake flat and not worth the effort of rigging up. A few kiters were going out but that was it. Was just about to give up and go home when I saw a couple of windsurfers out further downwind at the sailing club. So decided to drive down there to have a look before making any final decision to call it a day.

The two guys out were on 6-7m sails and planing 50% of the time. So maybe my 7.4 would be OK. Ummed and arred about whether I could be arsed. Eventually decided sod it I'll give it a go.

As I was rigging up the wind picked up a bit, at the same time as the two guys out were coming in. So would be out there on my lonesome....ooo-errr.... Tide was right out so tiring long walk/wade. When I eventually jumped on was relieved to discover I was perfectly powered up and going well.....nice! Wind picked up a bit more whilst I was out, and I realised how unfit I am at the moment. Came in after about 45 mins for a drink and a break (tiring long walk/wade....). Went out again and the wind had picked up a bit more. Was getting interesting now! Fully maxed out and flying, and big-time over-finned. Ankles were absolutely killing from trying to hold down the rail. Had to make an executive decision....could I be arsed to drag my kit all the way back in again to change fins?

Decided yes I had to if the rest of the session was going to be an enjoyable one. 25 mins of very tiring walking/wading back and forth to the car (where the 31cm and the screwdriver were) ensued. Was worth it though.....when I eventually got back out again was still fully maxed on the 7.4 but not breaking my ankles any more. Stayed out for a while until around 4.30pm when I was too tired to continue and had to call it a day.

A great "bonus" session, with much better wind than expected. Probably partly why it felt so good, since the conditions weren't all that exciting and I wasn't doing anything in particular. But easy conditions so I was sailing well, with a few nice small chop-hops and lots of practice on the gybes which were starting to feel good by the end. Was good fun charging around fully maxed on the 7.4 - would probably have been fine on the 6.0, but was impressed with the 7.4 that I never felt overpowered or out of control on it. More wind forecast for this weekend so looking forward to more of the same.
